I think that Hawthorne wrote Goodman brown because scary books were probably very popular during that time and he thought that he could write a scary book as well also I think that Stephen king was so scared of this book because this is something that could happen people worshipping the devil the people you know aren’t who they say they are and while Stephen king writes books that are clearly fake like IT, Cujo, Pet cemetery etc so I think he was scared due to it being really life like
